Newcastle Helix-based biosciences business CellRev, which features in new documentary The Future of Finance, is on a mission to transform medical manufacturing for the better.

Founded in 2018 and based in the Biosphere building, CellRev specialises in supporting cell-based vaccine, therapy and drug developers to manufacture more efficiently, avoiding the sort of bottlenecks that often happen within the creation of new medicines.

Beginning as a Newcastle University spinout, CellRev secured grant funding for its vital early stage research, before going on to partner with venture capital firms to grow into a game-changing biomanufacturing solution for the pharmaceutical industry.

CellRev CEO Chris Green’s vision for the business transcends his own personal ambitions.

"My job is to ensure this business scales to the highest heights and realises its full potential, “ he explains. “I feel privileged to lead this business, however, I’m humble enough to know that doing a good job could put me out of one; I may not be the person that takes it all of the way, and that's okay."

For Chris, securing investment as an SME is all about understanding what investors are looking for, and how to deliver it:

"The reason an investor invests in your business - and I think it's important that all founders, all entrepreneurs, all CEOs, understand this - is ultimately because they want to make more money, and your job is to make them more money. It's as simple as that."

But its also about telling your story and constantly evolving that message:

"Something we've done continuously through every investment round is constantly look at how we can tell our story better, because that's what raising investment is. Ultimately, it's storytelling."

For Chris, the myriad of options available when it comes to investment means that businesses can choose what works for them: “Where you get your financing from [as a business] is so case by case, based on your business model, your industry, the wider economic environment.”

CellRev’s future is looking bright, with several significant developments expected in the next year.

"The business is focused on delivering key proof points to unlock a multi-million pound capital injection,"

On a broader industry-wide level, Chris has his own hopes for the investment landscape.

I would love to see capital flowing more readily back into early-stage innovative businesses,"
