The District Energy Centre

A centralised energy system for the entire 24-acre site that will explore emerging energy technologies, housed in a building designed to blend in with the rest of the quarter.

Research at the District Energy Centre will consider how to increase efficiency savings and store grid-connected energy. New technologies will be used to maximise efficiency, availability and sustainability, making energy and the way we use it, smarter.

The Centre’s work as a test-bed research facility will benefit from key business partnerships, such as the Urban Science Building’s £2m Smart Grid Laboratory, created in partnership with Siemens and Northern Powergrid.

At a glance

  • Will provide affordable energy to all homes and buildings in the quarter
  • Centralised generation will greatly reduce carbon emissions annually
  • 40 year partnership with global energy giant ENGIE
